On Saturday we celebrated my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. What a milestone! I’m thankful to have wonderful parents who set a good example for my brother and sister and me, and for our kids, too!
So thinking back to 1962, the year they got married (yay for Google!)…
- John F. Kennedy was the President
- The first Wal-Mart store opened
- The Rolling Stones made their debut
- Lawrence of Arabia was the top grossing film
- The Beverly Hillbillies struck black gold, Texas Tea
Obviously a lot has changed in the half century since my mom and dad got married. Along came a son and two daughters, four grandchildren, and even a great-granddaughter on Friday (thanks Ashley for showing us all up with that gift!!). But at least one thing is the same – they are still making googly eyes at each other!
I am healthy, and for that I am most thankful. I try to remind myself not to take it for granted. While I go about my day-to-day business, and rarely think about my own health, I have friends who are fighting the tough fight against cancer, and some who are watching loved ones slip away. I hope these folks know that they’re in my thoughts and prayers…I’m sorry I don’t do a better job of saying it more often.
There’s just nothing better than having a great group of friends. I was reminded of this yesterday when my BFF spent her entire day helping me clean my house and decorate it for the holidays. All this in preparation for a get-together with a group of moms and dads who got to know each other because of our kids, but are great friends for much bigger reasons than baseball, football, and basketball. I am so thankful for these folks and for their friendship. These are the people who show up with food when someone is sick and who can tell that something is wrong just by looking at you or hearing your voice.
I’m thankful for lots of things – I’ll write more about them during this week – what better time to be thankful?
